Huge Chinese New Year 2019 celebrations announced at Al Maryah Island

Fireworks, performances and more planned outside Abu Dhabi's The Galleria

Huge Chinese New Year 2019 celebrations announced at Al Maryah Island

For the fifth year in a row, Chinese New Year fireworks will take over Al Maryah Island, as the waterfront promenade turns into an explosion of colour once again.

Betwen Thursday January 31 and Saturday February 2, you can head to The Galleria to celebrate the arrival of the New Year, with a range of activities, performances, workshops, events and more, and it will all culminate with an enormous fireworks display lighting up the Abu Dhabi skyline.

“Al Maryah Island has brought together this community to celebrate the most anticipated event on the Chinese calendar, year after year, and it is wonderful to witness Chinese culture being so aptly portrayed and commended,” says Chinese Ambassador to the UAE, Ni Jian.

So you can expect to see the streets and skies awash with Chinese lanterns, decorations, a traditional tree of fortune (upon which you can make your New Year’s wish), as well as a range of sales promotions, offers and more from outlets and luxury brands at The Galleria itself.

The kids will be able to make and design their own paper lanterns and good luck charms and ornaments, as well as Chinese drum making, dragon art and face painting. There will be Chinese calligraphy showcases, tea-making ceremonies and you can even take part in the classic Chinese New Year Red Packet tradition, which gives gifts symbolising good fortune.

There'll also be traditional Chinese lion dancing, mask-changing routines, drum shows and so much more inside the mall itself.

Don’t miss what are sure to be some amazing celebrations to ring in the New Year.

Free. Thu Jan 31-Sat Feb 2. The Galleria, Al Maryah Island.
