Make the most of the long weekend with these top tips

Things to do in abu dhabi, Brunch, Loca, Yas hotel, Yas mall, Mcgettigans, Islamic New Year, Manarat al saadiyat, Blank Canvas Community, Mya, Empire yas

They say good things come in threes – and that’s certainly the case when it comes to a long weekend.

To mark the Islamic New Year, many of us get Thursday off work and are starting to look forward to an extended weekend.

But what is there to do, we hear you ask.

Well, there’s plenty of cool things to keep you occupied in Abu Dhabi this long weekend.

You just need to know where to look.

To help you out, we’ve compiled a list of stuff to keep you busy and entertained over the next

Wednesday brunch at McGettigan’s

The good folk at Irish hotspot McGettigan’s are bringing the weekend forward to celebrate the Islamic New Year.

You can kick off your extended break with an awesome brunch full of great food, free-flowing drinks and plenty of craic (the Irish term for fun).

For one night only, you can get unlimited house beverages and all the usual delicious grub from 8pm-11pm for Dhs199.

There’ll be live music from 9pm before a DJ takes the reins at midnight to take you into the early hours.

We’ll drink to that.

Dhs199 (house beverages). Sept 12, 8pm-11pm. Al Raha Beach Hotel & Resort, Channel Street (02 652 4333).

Check out the new photography studio at Manarat Al Saadiyat

The launch of a new photography studio in Manarat Al Saadiyat will kick off with an awesome exhibition.

The Presence of Absence, by photographer Jassim Al Awadhi, is a great way to kick off an exciting time for the Abu Dhabi photography community.

Monthly courses ranging from basic photography to studio lighting and photo editing alongside exhibitions and talks will then kick-start the world of digital photography in the gallery.

Free (photography studio opening). Sept 12 6pm-10pm. Manarat Al Saadiyat, Saadiyat Island (02 657 5800).

Join the fight against plastic pollution

An Abu Dhabi mall is throwing its weight behind the fight against plastic pollution – and wants your help.

From September 12 to 15, Yas Mall is encouraging the capital’s residents to bring their plastic bags along and swap them for a sustainable reusable bag.

It comes as harrowing images of plastics polluting our oceans and disturbing marine life have thrust the issue firmly onto the public agenda in the past year.

And you can do your bit simply by collecting those plastic bags from that drawer in your kitchen and bringing them to Town Square in the Yas Island retail hub.

It’s part of the mall’s ‘Rethink Plastic’ campaign, with the help of the Emirates Nature-WWF (formerly known as Emirates Wildlife Society, World Wildlife Fund) and the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD).

The campaign is in aid of World Clean Up Day, which falls on September 15.

Meanwhile, you can also do your bit with the help of the Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi on Saturday afternoon.

The plush hotel is inviting residents of the capital to attend a morning of learning with marine biologist Arabella Willing, who will talk about the impact of marine debris on Abu Dhabi’s wildlife.

Priced at Dhs100 per person, with 50 percent discount for kids aged 5-12, it kicks off with breakfast at 7.30am, then a briefing at 8.15am.

The schedule includes a ‘nurdle hunt’ at 8.30am, where guests are encouraged to look for tiny plastic particles along Saadiyat Beach.

Catch a Grammy winner at Empire Yas

Another season, another world-renowned music star descending on Empire Yas for a superstar show.

Grammy Award winner Mya is heading to the Yas Island hotspot to launch the club’s new season.

You’ll know her for the Lady Marmalade collaboration with Christina Aguilera, Pink and Lil’ Kim, which was on the soundtrack to the movie Moulin Rouge in 2001.

She will take to the stage at Empire Yas alongside DJ Loso, DJ Allad and DJ Choppa on September 13.

Prices vary. Sept 13, 10pm-3.30am. Empire Yas, Yas Island Island (05 0501 5052).

Limber up for the Yas Mall - Ferrari World Run

Yes, the temperatures are cooling down and people are starting to go outdoors again.

But it’s still pretty hot, especially for those of us who like a regular jog around the block.

Luckily, there’s a huge indoor run this weekend which sounds like a fun way to burn some calories.

As the name suggests, Yas Mall - Ferrari World Run involves running from Ferrari World Abu Dhabi through Yas Mall and back.

You can run or walk 2.5km, 5km or 10Km in air conditioned comfort through a looped course of Ferrari World and Yas Mall, starting and finishing at Formula Rossa.

Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is offering post-run breakfast specials and park entry which can also be purchased in advance when registering for the run.

Sept 14, 7am-10am. Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, Yas Island.

Celebrate Mexican Independence Day at Loca

Yes, we know this is another brunch on our list, but we reckon Mexican Independence Day is an important day to celebrate (mainly because we love the Central American country’s food).

On September 15, Mexican restaurant Loca will be hosting a mega five-hour brunch in honour of the big day.
