Sporting stars lined up for Abu Dhabi golf festival

Action-packed schedule lined up for return of Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship

The sporting stars won’t just be on the golf course after a mega schedule of family-friendly activities were announced for this weekend’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.

The prestigious tournament will see some of the greats of the game, including four-time Major winner Rory McIlroy, World Number One Dustin Johnson, 2016 British Open victor Henrik Stenson and defending champion Tommy Fleetwood, vying for glory on the greens at Abu Dhabi Golf Club from January 18 until January 21.

Now organisers are making sure everyone has an ace time even when the action isn’t in full swing after launching a rich array of competitions, activities, fashion and food for the Championship Village during the four-day event.

Former England cricket captain Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff and British tennis hero Tim Henman will be hosting workshops to help visitors hone their skills.

There will be a host of interactive areas, such as the Golf Zone, Kids Zone and Chill Zone, to cater for all of the family.
The HSBC Golf Zone will give mini Mcllroy’s a chance to shine while those who have played before can fine tune their swing on the digital driving range and during the HSBC Hour – a daily 60-minute clinic that is absolutely free.

The global sports entertainment phenomenon, Topgolf Crush, will also be on display in Abu Dhabi for the very first time and available to play free of charge.

If the kids still need to work off some extra energy, let them loose on the HSBC Kids Zone, which is home to a jungle gym, soft play area, arts and crafts centre, plus a whole lot more.

You can also kick back and relax in the Chill Zone, which will be filled with comfy seating and laidback music, as well as a fleet of food trucks serving up global cuisine and sizzling barbecue stations.

For musical acts that are anything but par for the course will also be striking a chord with all ages throughout the festival of fun, playing everything from classical scores to chart hits.

A blast from the past will also be on offer at the Heritage Village, packed to the brim with local culture.

Golfing girls can also get dressed to impress for Ladies Day on Friday, January 19. An expert judging panel will pick out the best dressed golf-goer, who will walk away with two Business Class tickets to Milan and a pair of passes to Milan Fashion Week.

The following day – Wear Red Day – gives fans free entry by simply wearing red clothing; there’s also some great prizes up for grabs too, including the chance to win a car from Mercedes-Benz.

Peter German, the Championship’s Tournament Director said: “Every year we plan to improve the Championship not only with even better players but also with more innovative attractions to encourage fans and their families to come and enjoy the fantastic facilities,” said German.

“The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA is not just a great golf tournament but a day out for the whole family.”

From Dhs50 (daily pass), Dhs150 (four-day pass). Jan 18-21. Abu Dhabi Golf Club, Khalifa City, (055 302 0620).
