These Abu Dhabi women’s teams are looking for members

Vanessa Fitter checks out how women can get involved in sport in Abu Dhabi

Moving to a new city is an exhilarating experience. It can also be daunting. One of the easiest ways to settle in and meet like-minded people is by joining a club.

Becoming a member of a sports team is great for keeping fit, finding a new bunch of friends and taking part in new experiences.

Dr Heather Long Vandevoorde, public relations co-ordinator for the Abu Dhabi Harlequins agrees. “Joining a sports team is much more than just joining a sports team. It becomes a new way of life,” she says.

And she should know, Vandevoorde’s husband coaches one of the rugby club’s junior teams and both of their daughters play for the under-15 girls’ team.

Apart from the on-field action, the team also hosts social dos and get-togethers.

Our city has a few all-women’s teams and most are recruiting for new members all the time. Here are four brilliant options.

Abu Dhabi Harlequins
The Ladies field Sevens and Fifteens squads and take part in the Dubai Rugby Sevens each year. The team is open to first-timers and veterans and trains twice a week.

Abu Dhabi Sisters
A fairly new group, this volleyball team comprises former teammates and rivals from the Philippines, but welcomes players from all nationalities and skill abilities. The Sisters also support social causes close to their heart with regular fundraising events.

Capital Divas
Promoting fun, fitness and friendship, the all-female section of the dragon boat racing team, the Capital Dragons, welcomes people of all fitness and experience levels. The group has both morning and evening practices and the team has a strong social aspect as well.

Tribelles Abu Dhabi
Less than a year after starting up, this female triathlon group has grown to more than 200 members. So, whether you’re preparing for your first triathlon, you’re a seasoned Iron Man competitor or just looking for a girl squad to train with, this could be the place for you. You’ll have to be able to run, swim and cycle first, of course.
