Five cycling classes to try in Abu Dhabi

Does the idea of a spin class sound like absolute torture to you? Do you think that cycling is only for those who live in a full Lycra outfit and buckle-up shoes?

Well now’s the time to abandon all your preconceptions. Forget any visions you have of an arduous and boring 60-minute slog, indoor cycling is exciting, uplifting and genuinely so fun it often doesn’t feel like a workout.

These sessions let you boogie to the hottest tunes, travel through an alternate reality and burn more than 600 calories in one go. Think you hate cardio? It’s time to think again.

The Trip at Inspire Sports
The Trip is the spin class to end all spin classes. More like experiencing a 3D rollercoaster than a workout, it’s a fully immersive experience. On entering the studio it feels like you’ve come to some weird cinema where you sit on bikes instead of seats. The 40-minute HIIT session is projected on to a huge screen, and each class takes you through a different digitally created worlds. You’ll go up and down hills, travel the world (trip to Greece anyone?), and even go into space. This could be the ride of your life.
Dhs60. Ladies only. 30th Street, Al Bateen (050 157 5508).

Sycle at Sweat
This boutique fitness studio is beyond swish, with the little touches going a long way to making it a winner. The 45-minute Sycle classes challenge and invigorate in equal measures. The pumping tunes, candle-lit cycling room and fiercely encouraging (in a very nice way) instructors help you break those limits and push yourself further than you ever thought possible. Incorporating weights and resistance bands for upper body training, there are very few better ways to start or end your day.
Dhs70. Mixed and ladies-only classes. Al Seef Resorts & Spa by Andalus, Khalifa Park area (02 444 5543).

RPM
This cycling programme is all about working at your own pace and smashing personal goals. It’s perfect for those who are looking for a low-impact exercise class. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t work you hard. You can still burn up to 675 calories a session. Taking you through hill climbs, flat stretches and sprints, this Les Mills class will get your heart rate pumping and energy levels soaring.
Various prices and locations, including Let’s Go Gym, Al Muroor (02 666 0383).

Spinning club night at The Room
Here you get to work out and party at the same time. The spinning club nights let you experience the thrills, tunes and lights of a night out while you very rapidly sweating out half your body weight on a bicycle. You know it sounds good. Lose yourself in the music and keep pumping those legs to the end.
Dhs73.50. Zayed Sports City (02 444 4945).

Xpin and Sculpt at Fit & Flex Wellness Studio
Do you normally prefer strength training to cardio? Well this session isn’t all about the bike. Cycle your way through interval training, exhausting sprints and relentless hill climbs until your heart rate reaches its peak. Then after that you’ll move to the floor, pick up your weights and be lead through a series of strengthening and toning exercises. Just don’t forget to schedule in some recovery time afterwards. Believe us, you’ll need it.
Dhs75. Fit & Flex Wellness Studios, Abu Dhabi Golf Club (055 146 6123).
