Now that the weather has cooled down we have a fresh enthusiasm for walking, running, cycling and doing any kind of invigorating outdoor exercise.

Because when you live in a city that has as many amazing restaurants and brunches to offer as Abu Dhabi, keeping up a regular fitness routine is pretty essential to say the very least.

But if you’re not ready for any of the 10km runs, triathlons or hardcore obstacle races on offer, there’s an event coming up that is the perfect gentle introduction to the exercise world.

WALK 2019 is returning to Yas Island on November 15 for its thirteenth edition. Aiming to encourage everyone to lead a more active lifestyle, people of all ages and abilities are invited to take part in the 5km walk around Yas Marina Circuit.

Hosted by the Imperial College London Diabetes Centre in honour of World Diabetes Day, more than 20,000 people are expected to join in and take a stroll around the world-famous track.

The day also includes other fun fitness-related activities such as Zuma, Pilates and yoga, plus the chance for families to have a go on a climbing wall, trampolines and a range of giant inflatables.

You can pick up some healthy eating tips from the cooking demonstrations, grab a bite from one of the food trucks and there will even be a magician on hand to entertain the kids.

Tickets cost Dhs10 for adults over the age of 16 and those under 16 can take part for free, so it’s not even an expensive day out either. You’ll also get to walk away with a T-shirt, bag and cap to wear with pride on your next workout.

Dr Farhana bin Lootah, internal medicine consultant at Imperial College London Diabetes Centre, says: “The average adult today spends more than half of their day in sedentary mode, which has been shown to slow down metabolism and affect the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar and break down body fat.

“This is why it is very important to remind everyone of the benefits of physical exercise, including walking. It helps regulate blood sugar and increases sensitivity to insulin.

“WALK 2019 is a very good reminder for all of us to start making changes in our lifestyles. Walking is easier than other types of physical activities and we can all do it and overcome any challenges we may face. Even if you have been leading a sedentary lifestyle for a long while, the important thing is to get started and invest in your future health.”

It’s time to walk it off, everyone.
