Shedd app

Forget the mall and shop for pre-loved items from home

Abu Dhabi, as we know, is home to the most incredible fashion brands from across the world. But sometimes that Louis Vuitton handbag or Armani watch you received as a gift is (in our best fashionista voice) so last year.

Alex Hutley and Tariq Zabian, two former dubizzle employees, have brought bargain hunters Shedd, a mobile app that allows you to buy and sell pre-loved fashion items. It launched in October 2015 and has since amassed more than 40,000 registered users.

How does it work? Simple. Once you’ve decided on what you wish to sell, take a snap or two of the item (let’s say a black dress) and upload them on to the app. You should then hashtag your post, for example: #zara #dress #black #neverworn as this will allow fellow shoppers to find your item. And after writing a brief description and your price, you’re done.

We gave Shedd a go, and we must say, it’s extremely straightforward. From signing up, which you can do with your Facebook or email account, to chatting with people about items for sale, the app is smooth and had no glitches – when we used it anyway.

We managed to upload a few different items for sale, which thankfully we sold, as well as buying some items as gifts for our family. The only downside was having to deal with people who would offer one tenth of the price we put our item on for. Really?

Zabian says: “Creating Shedd has been a fun and exciting, yet challenging journey. Creating your own app is a popular trend nowadays, but creating one which fills a huge gap in the market is
highly rewarding.”

The Shedd team continuously observes the ever-changing UAE fashion landscape and regularly surveys people in the UAE on their shopping habits. They have carried out polls that have highlighted the behaviours of female shoppers. This has provided valuable insights into how much people in the country love to shop, their emotional habits towards spending and how many unworn fashion items are lying in
their wardrobes.

For example, one of the most recent surveys revealed that 33 percent of Abu Dhabi women admitted to having more than five unworn fashion items hanging in their wardrobes, compared to 24 percent of women in Dubai. And as a marketplace with almost 50,000 buyers and sellers already, that means there’s a lot of choice for you to browse, and add to.

The Shedd app is free to download on the Apple App Store and Google Play. For more details visit
