Time Out Says
Italian dining at its best is all about fresh ingredients and simple well-matched flavours. It’s this simplicity that works so well at Verso.
Set in Abu Dhabi’s newest luxury hotel – the Grand Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel Emirates Pearl – Verso opened in July and is one of a few new Italian restaurants in the capital.
All bright yellows and blues, the vibrant décor makes for an upbeat, sunny vibe, despite the lack of fellow diners on our visit. It’s quiet, but still has a warm atmosphere thanks to the quirky ornaments and comfy, brightly coloured cushions dotted about.
The family-friendly trattoria promises authentic dishes and the menu is short, but not to its detriment. There are antipasti, salads, pizzas and pastas – but nothing super fancy, making it an ideal spot for a casual meal.
We kick off with a sharing plate of cold cuts and some arancini. The latter are a winner, the rice balls are perfectly cooked and pull apart to reveal gooey mozzarella. A charcuterie plate includes bresaola, veal ham and beef salami. It’s all tasty enough, but at Dhs170 it’s overpriced, especially given the portion size.
For mains, don’t miss the pizzas – a pillowy crust is perfectly blistered and surprisingly light. We opt for the quattro formaggio, and, like the restaurant and menu, it’s simple in the best of ways.
Pumpkin ravioli doesn’t fare so well. Despite the pasta being stuffed with the rich, sweet/savoury pumpkin it’s paired with an overpowering tomato sauce that doesn’t quite work. A simple butter and sage would have worked wonders for it.
There’s a deli counter for desserts (or to take away if you’re full), which is cute.
Verso has fresh flavours and well-cooked, simple dishes. With more diners and some tweaks to the prices, it could become quite the go-to venue.
