Turtle Bay Bar & Grill

Review: Classy surf and turf restaurant in a stunning location

Time Out Says

Turtle Bay in the Saadiyat Rotana is something of a destination. By the time you’ve arrived via the snaking roads of Saadiyat Island, the grand lobby, and the lush grounds of the resort, not only will you have worked up an appetite, you’ll surely be impressed by the setting.

Is it worth the trip, and does the experience match up to the location? In short, yes.

Service is slick and friendly, the dining room is smart but casual, and the rooftop terrace (if the weather allows) is a stunner. The menu is fairly concise, with some small plates, starters, raw choices, meat and seafood grills and other mains. Prices may look steep at first (especially as grills don’t come with sides) but you will eat really well here and there’s a 20 percent discount for ADCB cardholders.

Not all that we eat is perfect, but it does come pretty close.

A jumbo prawn cocktail has plenty of plump crustaceans but they’re very cold, meaning they lack a little taste. The accompanying pico de gallo sauce only comes alive with an extra squeeze of lime.

A smoked carpaccio is the highlight. The thin slices of beef are sprinkled with crispy sunchoke petals and citrus sauce. The flavours and textures are just perfect.

A huge Angus rib-eye delivers on flavour and presentation, but there’s a lot of fat on it (and we love fatty steaks).

Scallops and short rib is literally a plate of two halves. On one side are the scallops, beautifully cooked and perfectly seasoned, with a sweet cauliflower puree, leeks and mushrooms. On the other side, the wonderfully wobbly short rib suffers in comparison, but is a fine piece of meat nonetheless.

It’s not all perfect but does that really matter when we have such a great time?

The bill (for two)
1x jumbo prawn cocktail Dhs94
1x beef carpaccio Dhs85
1x 400g USDA Angus rib-eye Dhs240
1x scallops and short rib Dhs233
1x roasted mushrooms Dhs30
1x large water Dhs38
1x shaved pineapple Dhs45
Total (including taxes) Dhs765

The bottom line
Definitely worth checking out.
