Anyone who’s watched British TV of a weekend morning will probably recognise Simon Rimmer. He’s a good-natured chef who co-presents a magazine-type show while showing viewers and studio guests how to cook classic dishes from around the world.

He’s down to earth, makes people feel comfortable and no-doubt knocks up some cracking food while making it all look incredibly simple.

We’re at his bar at Yas Marina, The Scene for lunch and, on this occasion, tuck into some crispy squid to start (nicely seasoned and perfectly cooked, but a bit of a small portion) before moving onto a brilliant burger (upgraded so we have proper chunky chips rather than fries) and breaded chicken (anyone familiar with the Teesside Parmo should get excited).

The venue has all the same traits as Rimmer himself. There are no pretentions, the menu is filled with things that you want to order and it’s a place you’d happily spend a few hours at.

We could do with more like it in Abu Dhabi.
