The Retreat

Review: Stylish bar food in a relaxing spot

Time Out Says

It’s late afternoon and we’re sitting in the surprisingly busy The Retreat at The Westin. The bar is a fairly chilled place, with a top outdoor area. It’s perfect for those staying at the resort, anyone who’s finished a round of golf or people who live nearby. We can imagine it gets busy with locals of an evening and for sports games.

Anyone who does visit could do a lot worse than ordering some food to go with their drinks, too, as on this evidence it’s pretty tasty.

The menu isn’t huge, but manages to fit in salads, mains such as roast chicken, grilled salmon and steak and chips, some interesting-sounding burgers and classics including nachos, fajitas and wings.

We go for the spiced calamari crackers, which come with a punchy aioli, and the bockwurst hot dog. The battered squid is crunchy, with a good kick of pepper. The portion is decent, too, making this a good bar bite.

The veal bockwurst comes in a tomato and onion bun with tangy sauerkraut, pickled gherkin and horseradish mayo as well as excellent fries. There’s a lot of flavours but we approve.

While The Retreat might not be on everyone’s doorstep, those who live near can count themselves lucky.

The bottom line

Great if you live nearby or play golf.
