The Jazz Bar and Dining

Time Out Says

Half fine-dining restaurant, half lively nightspot, Jazz Bar is an unusual place hidden away in the depths of the Hilton (you have to cross through Hemingway’s to get to it). That’s not to say it’s unpleasant, however. The dining area is clean and classy, while the cosy bar gets packed pretty quickly, boasting a lively, cheerful vibe that’s sorely missed in many of the city’s other restaurants. The raised stage behind the bar means most seats offer a good view of the live band that belts out classic pop hits night after night.

And that’s the first oddity – whereas you’d expect a jazz tune or two on a Friday night spent at Jazz Bar, what you actually get is the same old tired pop that’s played every evening across the city (albeit better performed versions). Meals are hit and miss; well-balanced, perfectly cooked dishes at one end of the spectrum, confused combinations that don’t quite work at the other, and the wait is long (although it is at least eased by the entertainment). That said, the menu is brave, and it deserves to be sampled.
