The Captain's Arms

A great weekend spot for pub grub al fresco

Time Out Says

Oh Captain’s, our Captain’s, what have you done? There we were, about to give the place a rocking 10 out of 10 for its awesome Saturday afternoon soundtrack – some AC/DC here, a bit of the Eagles there – when, right out of nowhere, up crop The Backstreet Boys. (No, we don’t want it that way, thanks.)

Bad boy bands apart, our lazy weekend lunch is really rather good. The food is broad ranging and acceptably spit and sawdust; as well as the classic pub staples of burgers, bangers and lamb shanks there’s also a solid selection of salads, wraps and pizzas. Of the latter we’d particularly recommend the Diavola, which is slightly too soggy but packs a welly of spice. The shepherd’s pie, sadly, suffers the classic pub kitchen calamity of somehow managing to be cold in the middle and molten on the top. It’s tasty, though, and accompanied by a side salad that’s lovely and crisp and drizzled in a tangy vinaigrette that elevates it from the standard green afterthought.

The place, it should also be said, is rammed. And rightly so. The food is fine but it’s the setting that makes it – an array of outdoor wooden benches packed out with smiling friends and families. In other words, what weekends are all about.

The bottom line

Solid pub eats in a terrific outdoor space.
