Time Out Says

We love it when a new hotel opens in Abu Dhabi, mainly because it means that we have a whole host of new restaurants to try out (it’s a hard life, honest).

We’re in awe of the recently- opened Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort from the moment we enter the lobby.

Each room is like a lesson in how to do classy and stylish interior design, and Lebanese restaurant Tean is just as clean and effortlessly chic.

We take a seat out on the two-tiered patio area, just a few metres from the white sands of Saadiyat Beach.

The staff are quick to bring us shawls, make sure we’re comfortable, and also help us out with some recommendations.

We decide to try some Middle Eastern staples; the prawn fattoush (because if a Lebanese restaurant can’t excel at this zesty salad then something is definitely amiss), and equally as predictably, a bowl of smooth and creamy hummus.

We’re thrilled to discover that the former is almost certainly the best fattoush we’ve ever tasted (and we’ve tried a lot, believe us). The prawns are absolutely enormous and it’s the perfect mix of crunchy salad, sweet dressing and meaty shellfish. We also like the fact the hummus is just oily enough without tasting too strongly of garlic (we’re sure the taxi driver taking us home was extremely grateful for that).

We stick to the classics with our mains, too. The chicken in the shish taouk is beautifully marinated if a little dry, however the huge chunks of beef in the shish kebab are totally faultless.

The spicy harra potatoes with fresh lemon are the perfect side, and despite the hearty portions, we obviously have to eat it all. It’s simply too good.

The desserts are largely traditional, and we’re fascinated by the idea of the rose and pistachio crème brûlée with Turkish delight and mastika ice cream. In reality, it’s even more special than it sounds on paper and although the floral afternotes are a bit too strong for us, the decorative rose petals and gold leaf sheets mean it gets full marks for presentation.

With such brilliant food and ambiance, you’d never guess that Tean was an Abu Dhabi newbie.

For the crème brûlée. It’s nothing like the hundreds you’ve tried before, we promise
