Time Out Says

Switch has been satisfying taste buds of diners in Dubai for a fair number of years already, and has managed to build quite a reputation for itself. So, we visit its first restaurant in the capital with raised expectations.

The swanky Al Bateen venue has a similar vibe to The Dubai Mall one. Its all-white, futuristic interior is lit up with neon lights. Unfortunately, little light streams onto the outdoor deck, which makes reading the menu tricky if you’re there at night.

The restaurant serves popular international dishes with the team’s own special twist. Its Tabasco Cola wings (which are actually chicken drumsticks) are one example. The pieces are coated in a spicy, Cola sauce that isn’t too hot or sweet.

It’s a tasty starter, but it’s the Dr Pepper short ribs that have us going back in for seconds and thirds. We turn on the lights on our phones to find a heap of crunchy beetroot over a stack of ribs that offer very little resistance once we dig in. We set down our knives and tear into the tender shreds of meat with ease. The flavour is strong, and the beetroot offers a nice contrast in taste and texture.

Switch is also known for its camel meat dishes, such as the bolognese, sliders and even a dip. We opt for the camel burger. It’s not the biggest one we’ve had, but it certainly is the juiciest. The meat is cooked well and each bite practically melts in the mouth. It’s a clear winner.

Finally, Switch also has a reputation for its inventive desserts. After a few minutes spent debating, we settle for the Kinder Melt. Our waiter brings over a plate with a white chocolate egg in the middle and proceeds to pour hot chocolate sauce over it. As the shell melts away, it reveals a thick slice of fudge topped with squares of the chocolate. Biscuit crumble breaks up the smooth cocoa bits. There’s just nothing to fault. It’s a sweet end to the meal.
