Street9 Cafe

Is the food-truck inspired venue worth visiting?

Time Out Says

Over the last few years, Abu Dhabi has been inundated with food trucks. They originated in the US, and were initially a way for chefs to free themselves from the budgetary constraints, and owner interference, of restaurants. In the UAE, we’ve had food trucks from the States pulling up for food festivals, home-grown brands branching out into four-wheeled mobile kitchens and, up in Dubai, a clutch of Last Exit truck stops. With Street9 Café, things have come full circle. It’s a venue inspired by the food truck movement. And it’s good.

The menu isn’t huge, but what is present is a creative take on down-to-earth, grab-and-go grub.

We skip the mac ‘n’ cheese served in an ice cream cone (though it looks tasty) and plump for the café’s take on popcorn shrimp. These are doused in a little too much sweet and sour sauce for our liking, but the prawns are juicy and cooked well.

The kale and feta salad is one of two veggie options. It’s served with walnuts and pomegranate seeds and tossed in a pomegranate dressing. The feel-good salad is fresh and tasty, but it’s not the most inventive of options. And we’d like more feta.

The prawn curry, meanwhile, is unusual. There’s a creamy mushroom sauce folded into rice (giving it an almost risotto-like texture) and topped with prawns. It’s full of flavour and is a novel take on the standard dish.

But it’s the desserts that shine here. The selection is original and indulgent. The s’mores brownie is a mash-up of two classics. A brownie square sits in a pool of dense fudge sauce and is topped with toasted marshmallows and a cracker. It is every bit as decadent as it sounds and we love it.

We hope Street9 keeps on trucking for years to come.

The bill (for two)
1x kale salad Dhs50
1x prawn pops Dhs60
1x Mama’s prawn curry Dhs70
1x s’mores brownie Dhs35
1x large water Dhs20
Total (excluding taxes) Dhs235

The bottom line

It doesn’t all work, but it is all interesting.
