Steroid Café

Time Out Says

Located next to the cavernous gym MProve Fitness, you can be forgiven for thinking that Steroid Café is only aimed at fitness fanatics and those obsessed with pumping iron.

But there’s a mixed crowd when we visit on a Saturday lunchtime – some of our fellow guests are clearly here for a post-gym protein fix, but others have just popped in for a coffee.

The Al Maqta eatery has all the makings of a classic hipster café. Smoothies are served in milk bottles, granola is dished up in pretty layers in Kilner jars, and the speciality coffees are presented in all manner of wonderful ways and flavours (saffron cold brew anyone?)

The food is split into all-day breakfasts, sandwiches, salads and also dishes designed for when you want to get ‘lean’ or ‘bulk up’.

We go for a three-egg Spanish omelette, and its quite a plateful. The ratatouille-style vegetables in the eggs are fresh and crunchy, and the sweet potato fries are a real treat.

There’s also a whole half an avocado, beef bacon (which doesn’t exactly blow us away) and slab of bread topped with cream cheese. It’s certainly not sourdough as advertised on the menu, but we still devour it all. It’s certainly ideal as a post-exercise dish, or for when you’re really, really hungry.

Our TMT protein smoothie sets us back Dhs44, almost as much as the omelette. But at least the mix of banana, yoghurt, protein and almond milk is a tasty boost.

It’s not the cheapest café around, but the high-quality offerings are very consistent.
