A sophisticated Asian restaurant on Saadiyat

Time Out Says

You can’t always jump on a plane every time you want authentic Thai and Chinese dishes, even though it would be tempting to grab your passport and go.

The brilliantly bustling streets of Shanghai and the postcard-worthy scenes of Thailand will have to wait for another time when we’re far less busy enjoying Abu Dhabi. Anyway travel is stressful, not to mention expensive, so we’re quite happy to stay put and see what’s on offer on shores closer to home.

We’re in the mood for Asian delicacies and heading to Saadiyat Island for our own picture-perfect scenes of white sands and turquoise waters. Plus, Sontaya has a prime spot on the island’s St. Regis resort – slap bang in the middle and flanked by still waters, overlooking the beach and looking out to sea.As far as dining rooms go, it’s pretty hard to beat.

The water outside the windows looks inviting but if we dive right in to cool off we may not be allowed to come back. On a midweek night the restaurant is quite busy, but we manage to secure a table and with other guests in the room there’s a nice atmosphere bubbling away gently  in the background.

Before weve even decided  decide what to order, we’ve already stuffed our face with the complimentary crackers and sweet chilli sauce and we’re embarrassed by how quickly we’ve managed to clear the plate. Whoops. Eventually, we decide to share a few things and we’re glad we did because that means you get a taste of everything.

The pan-fried crab cakes are dainty and pleasant. The mango salsa adds  some vibrancy but the cakes are a little bland if we’re being honest.

There are no such issues with the Tom Yum soup, which is wonderfully rich, with a chilli kick and packed full of prawns and mushrooms.

Meanwhile, the yellow prawn curry is a generous helping of vegetables and seafood but we would welcome a but less spice. Packed with creamy coconut and fiery chilli, the laksa is a dream and we find ourselves loudly slurping unapologetically as we finish off the bowl. It’s a beauty of a dish, and we would eat it again and again (and again).

With food this good there’s even more reason to delay that trip to Southeast Asia. There’s plenty to shout about at home.
