Si Ristorante Italiano & Bar

A stylish Italian newcomer with some delicious dishes.

Time Out Says

It’s been a busy year for Abu Dhabi’s dining scene with an influx of new eateries jostling for a slice of the action.

And each time a new one swings open its doors, we wonder if it will make a dent in a super-competitive market?

Step forward upscale Italian venue Si Ristorante, one of the capital’s newest recruits.

There’s plenty to like about this stylish Saadiyat Island eatery, with its wide-ranging menu, slick décor and welcoming staff who go to every effort to ensure you leave with a full stomach and a smile on your face.

But does it have the oomph to edge out a bumper list of competitors? Well, it makes a good first impression as beaming smiles and a relaxed vibe greet us, but the vast space lacks intimacy and feels echoey while quiet.

The starters, oven-baked messy prawns with garlic, chilli and herbs and an overly chewy calamari fritti, are tasty if not particularly memorable.

Credit where it’s due, though, as our mains are both super.

The risotto ai fungi is a classic dish and a good measuring stick to judge such a restaurant by.

Served with wild mushrooms, parmesan, herbs and a hint of tomato, it’s absolutely delightful.

Sausage pizza, or salsiccie de pollo Italiana to give it its proper name, gets another big tick. With terrific flavour and a perfect base, which is just the right amount of doughy, it’s just brilliant.

Dessert is a bit more hit and miss. Hazelnut crunch with Nutella cream will have chocolate lovers queuing around the block, but the tasty tiramisu is a little on the stingy side.

Overall, there are more plusses than minuses, and while Si is still fairly new, for the amount we pay we’re expecting a little more. With a more homely feel this could be right up there with the city’s best.

The bill (for two)

The bottom line
Almost brilliant, but not quite there yet.
