Shang Palace is one of the more authentic restaurants in the city, serving dishes such as dried seafood clay pot with sliced abalone, sea cucumber and dried scallop in oyster sauce or crispy octopus with plum sauce in among the usual wok-fried seafood, Peking duck and spring rolls options. The menu is long and includes a section of healthy choices plus some intriguing desserts (chilled avocado salsa with pearl aloe vera or braised ginger sweet soup with a black sesame dumpling). The restaurant is elegant and understated, with modern Chinese lantern light-fixtures and the like, but we would recommend sitting outside where tables overlook the Grand Mosque and the canal. Meals here are best enjoyed at a leisurely pace and you’re immediately served a delicate jasmine green tea on arrival (there’s a dedicated tea sommelier). Unfortunately this unhurried approach extends to the service, which is by no means terrible, but a bit slow. Food, however, is worth the wait, and the setting here hits the mark, so if you don’t mind waiting a bit for your food, you’ll find very little to fault.
