Review: Soaring steakhouse with menu to match stunning views

If you need a restaurant to up the ante on a date or give your visitors once last chance to absorb Abu Dhabi at its best then impress them at one of the city’s top steakhouses: Ray’s Grill.

It’s a tall order making steak standout – just cook it well, season it perfectly, let it rest and you’re halfway to a slap up meal. But towering over your average restaurant, way up on the 63rd floor of the five-star Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, you will find food elevated to a high standard. Mostly.

We arrive on a Thursday evening to a fully-booked restaurant (so book in advance, people), however a half-hour wait in neighbouring Ray’s Bar is no bad thing. Back in the restaurant, tables are dotted around the dark, elegant restaurant’s windows with good reason – the views up here are spectacular, taking the wow factor up a notch.

We start with the pit-smoked brisket with sweet potato. Juicy, slow-cooked and tender, it’s a big hit. But the spicy baby octopus and tomato stew underwhelms in comparison. Served in a skillet, we presume it’s supposed to encapsulate the flavours of the Mediterranean with beef chorizo, red peppers and tomato alongside the baby octopi. However it’s swimming in a pool of melted halloumi, which doesn’t work for us.

Mains, though, are just fantastic. Wagyu lovers, don’t be afraid to try the 300g rump as a cheaper option to the fillet or rib-eye. It’s big, bold, beautifully cooked and costs significantly less than the other cuts. We order buttery sweet potato mash and extra-garlicky mushrooms on the side and it’s the dish of the night. Canadian lobster is also bursting with flavour.

We leave Ray’s Grill on a high. And not just because we’re 63 floors up.
