A friendly, good-value Italian venue

Time Out Says

Just because we’re always on the look out for new, exciting  restaurants here at Time Out Abu Dhabi, it doesn’t mean we don’t care about the comfortable, familiar ones.

So, instead of seeking out somewhere underground, backstreet or still bright and shiny, this week we’re paying a visit to Prego’s, one of the more time-honoured Italian restaurants in the capital.

We’re not short of good Italian eateries in Abu Dhabi, nor are you stuck for dining options if you’re in Beach Rotana, but to overlook Prego’s would mean passing up a genuinely friendly place that serves good, honest food.

On our latest visit we’re eating alfresco, on the terrace overlooking the hotel’s beach and lawn area. There are plenty of other people outside, creating a nice buzz, and a decent amount of tables are occupied indoors, too.

Most of the dishes are okay value, with antipasti and pastas coming in at around Dhs75 to Dhs110. If you’re after meat or fish, you’re looking at prices of about Dhs140 to Dhs200.

On this occasion, we’re satisfied with some burrata and roasted octopus to start and mains of braised beef ravioli and lasagne. Add in a couple of pints and you’re looking at less than Dhs500 for a very tasty and satisfying meal.

First comes a huge wedge of bread with some oil and tapenades. We approve wholeheartedly and finish it off.

The burrata, while far from being the best we’ve ever eaten, can be recommended, being served at about the right temperature and accompanied by some juicy tomatoes. Along with a rather brilliant octopus tentacle (crispy on the outside, unctuous in the middle) on a bed of creamy potatoes, the first course is pretty much faultless.

Mains follow in the same vein. While the full portion of ravioli gets too rich by the end (there’s an awful lot of butter), there’s no doubting the flavour packed inside the meaty pasta parcels. The lasagne, piping-hot and all-too-tempting when it arrives, is another simple dish done well.

With a friendly feel, staff who want to look after you, and warming food, this is simple Italian cooking as it should be.

Maybe it’s time you checked out Prego’s again soon.
