When an Italian meal begins with Arabic flatbread rather than ciabatta, olive oil and balsamic vinegar, you do start to worry. But the ensuing food, picked from a short and uninspired menu, will likely be of reasonable – if entirely unmemorable – quality. The tenderloin carpaccio is on the watery side, but the accompanying raw mushrooms and slices of parmesan ensure texture and flavour. The bruschetta, meanwhile, is little more than garlic bread with olive oil and tomato on top.

A filling alternative is the calzone, where a light doughy shell houses a jumble of cheese, ham, mushrooms and tomato. If you’re staying for dessert, avoid the chocolate mousse, which has the consistency of a slab of pâté and comes with bland caramel sauce. Peppino talks the talk with its classic dishes, but fails to stamp its own identity on them. It’s a distinctly average Italian that needs more heart.
