It is genuinely difficult to fault this wonderful restaurant and over the course of all of our visits it has been nothing short of flawless, which is why it collected the award for 2019.
As soon as you enter the classy venue, through a huge hidden door, it feels like being welcomed into an exclusive club. The dining room is elegant and stylish, with wooden panelling and floors (you get the name now?), dim lighting and trendy photographs of the likes of Mick Jagger and David Bowie on the wall.
Plus, on our visits, it’s been absolutely packed, which is always a good sign.
It’s the little details that make the difference here, servers are attentive but not intrusive, bartenders will make mixed drinks for you that aren’t on the menu and everything that is put onto the plate is done so with a great deal of care and thought.
From the Marmite butter that comes with the freshly baked bread to the last bite of dessert, we’re thoroughly impressed with everthing we eat here.
It’s an innovative and modern experience without being pretentious or over-elaborate.
When it comes to the meat, all the cuts are displayed so you can see what you fancy. The staff will even explain the varying cuts, the ageing process and marbling, if that’s your sort of thing.
The black onyx tenderloin is a real treat, cooked pink, served with a range of salts and peppers so you can flavour to your liking.
It’s as good a steak as any we’ve ever had and the accompanying chips are thick, crisp on the outside and fluffy in the middle; the benchmark to which all chips should be measured against from now on.
The fish is equally brilliant, with the huge fillet is encased in a thin and wonderfully crisp batter.
The thrills continue to the puddings, too.
