Time Out Says

Tucked away upstairs at the Yas Viceroy, this is one very good looking restaurant. The nautical all-white furnishings give the eaterie warmth while still remaining very funky and modern. The whole establishment follows the futuristic, space-age vibe of the hotel with cool pendant lighting and red flowers on all the tables really standing out against all the white. As you walk in there is a stunning display of fresh fish, clams, caviar and more all on ice and nicely adding to the seafood theme of the venue.

We started the meal with seared scallops and grilled prawns. Those were both very small portions, but they whet our appetite nicely and really there is nothing worse than feeling full before your main even arrives. The scallops were perfectly cooked, served simply with white asparagus, carrot, a creamy garlic sauce and a small salad dressed with a lemon vinaigrette. The grilled prawns were also very good as an entrée, grilled with the tails and heads kept on and full of flavour. They were again a small serving but were fresh, served with a garlic aioli and a zesty rocket salad.

For mains we decided to go with two fish dishes because this is what they claim they do best at Nautilus. We went with the sea bass and the salmon. The sea bass consisted of pan roasted fillets of fish on a bed of artichoke, cannelloni beans and baby squash. It also came with some mussels which were small but the flavour was excellent. The dish was well cooked, very moist and tasty with a generous amount of the pan juice that was very tasty. The salmon was nicely cooked with a crispy skin on one side and came with a delicious side of porcini mushroom, celeriac and sweet potato topped off with a citrus crème sauce. The sauce was very rich and had a very strong orange flavour which complemented the salmon very well.

Unfortunately the desserts were hit and miss. The passion fruit and coconut was an absolute stand out. It came with the best passion fruit sorbet we’ve ever tasted, dusted with toasted coconut alongside a delicious coconut meringue and a passion fruit gelée which had a tremendous depth of flavour. We were particularly impressed with the presentation of the platter.

The terrarium which came very cleverly presented as a small fishbowl promised caramel praline with chocolate. We were so impressed with the presentation it even had green chocolate fake seaweed placed into it to represent a real fishbowl. But it was too cold and became colder still as you reached the centre. It tasted as though it had been taken from the fridge and served immediately.

Service here is fun and friendly. The staff are very switched on and professional but they have a sort of cool, laid-back vibe about them. They just need to get a few of the basics right and it has the potential to be excellent.
