Time Out Says

W e know it’s a lazy order in a Middle Eastern restaurant, but the mixed grill at Mijana deserves your attention. This isn’t your usual chunks of meat thrown on a plate. Each piece of perfectly-seasoned and tender chicken, beef and lamb looks artfully positioned, and the drizzles of tahini and tomato seasoning give it the look of a dish you might find in a high-end French restaurant.

Style, then, is taken quite seriously at Mijana. Something that shouldn’t be all that surprising given it is located in one of the city’s grandest hotels. The Ritz-Carlton’s marble, gold and chandelier-heavy décor is a sight to behold. And it gets even better when you walk outside to find the softly-lit courtyard, where the hotel’s restaurants spill out onto terraces that buzz with the sound of happy chatter.

Mijana benefits from this location, but be warned that you’ll encounter quite a lot of shisha smoke if you dine outside. But if that doesn’t bother you, there’s an Arabic band to entertain you out on the terrace.

There aren’t too many surprises on the menu here. If you’ve ever been to a Lebanese restaurant, you’ll recognise most of the dishes. But that doesn’t mean you can’t try something new.

Ask the staff and they’ll confidently make suggestions, especially when it comes to pairing mezze. It’s refreshing to find a restaurant where the service is so helpful and insightful.

What arrives at the table is fairly standard in taste. The wheel hasn’t been reinvented here, but you won’t find anything to fault. The hummus is hearty, the rokakat cheese rolls pleasingly crunchy and the mixed grill a satisfying collection.

While it can sometimes feel like the presentation has taken precedent over the cooking, it’s still a pleasant place to dine. You’re sure to leave here feeling well fed and content.
