McGettigan’s Al Ain

Review: Cheerful Irish pub serving up classic dishes

Time Out Says

Sometimes you just need a hearty plate of proper pub grub. And when that mood strikes, we’d suggest a trip to the new
McGettigan’s Al Ain.

The pub, which replaced the Horse & Jockey, is everything folk have come to know and love about the popular Irish chain.

We visit at the end of the week, and it seems half of Al Ain have the same idea. A non-smoking dining room boasts large windows, while a narrow bar area is lively. We choose to eat in the latter, enjoying the buzzy, relaxed vibe.

The menu is as you’d expect, (though not as extensive as some branches) and all the favourites are on there. We stay traditional, opting for the fish and chips and beef pie.

Food arrives promptly and service is friendly.

The portion of fish and chips is very generous, especially given the very reasonable Dhs65 price tag. Two substantial chunks of fish come in a light, tasty batter. But the huge chips let the side down this time – they aren’t particularly crispy or tasty, with stodgy potato inside.

The mash that comes with the pie, however, is a delight. Paired with the rich gravy and tender meat, it’s a great, homely dish that gets full marks.

If you’re after comforting food and a pint of the black stuff, get yourself to McGettigan’s Al Ain.

The bottom line
A fun, friendly place for hearty grub.
