Market Kitchen

A previous favourite that isn’t living up to its early promise

Time Out Says

Le Royal Méridien’s Market Kitchen has been going since 2014 and even walked away with a highly commended nod for Best Newcomer at the Time Out Restaurant Awards. After two years on the scene, we’re crossing fingers it’s even better than we remember.

However, from the start the service is all over the place. Different waiting staff end up performing different tasks, meaning the service is inconsistent, slow and impersonal. We have to repeat our requests and follow them up, which is far from ideal.

To start, we order the romaine chicken Caesar salad with lemon and chilli. A simple dish, yes, but surely Market Kitchen will add a bit of pizazz? Sadly not. The salad is mostly an insipid pile of lettuce, a couple of croutons and a few slices of bland chicken. Even the dressing is forgettable. And we’re not sure where to find the lemon and chilli.

Our parmesan crusted chicken with asparagus and basil lemon butter, meanwhile, comes in a small portion and though the flavours are decent we want to see more on the plate.

Market Kitchen is still a pleasant place to eat, but on this visit the food isn’t living up to our early expectations.

Sad face.

The bottom line
Seems to be lacking passion.
