Le Beaujolais

Review: Affordable, bistrot-style French fair that’s as tasty as it is simple

Time Out Says

Le Beaujolais has been around for almost 28 years. The restaurant has seen the landscape around it change over the decades, but through all of that it has remained its simple, humble self.

Although located in the Mercure Abu Dhabi Centre Hotel, the restaurant’s decor is like a cosy bistro you’d find in one of more traditional Parisian arrondissements. Large mirrors, twisted light fixtures and checked table cloths are all present and correct. The food too, is presented simply. There are no bells or whistles, but who needs them when everything on the plates are so good.

The salmon tart may be listed as an appetiser but it could very well be a light meal in itself. Its base is flaky and the zing of the accompanying sauce cuts through the rich filling and it comes with a basic side salad.

The Angus fillet is rustic-looking – think meat and three veg – and immensely satisfying. The shepherd’s pie, labelled “grandma’s recipe”, is like receiving a warm hug from the matriarch herself.

If you’re looking for a welcoming spot that won’t break the bank (and comes with a side order of charming service) this is the place for you.

The bottom line
No frills, but plenty of culinary thrills.
