Time Out Says
With a big reputation and an even bigger dessert menu, it’s easy to see why this elegant London export has created a buzz since opening in July.
The décor is as stylish as you would expect from the glamorous Al Maryah Island mall, with a white marble interior, crystal chandeliers and pink velvet sofas.
And this opulent feel translates to the food menu, too, which features refined delights such as salmon and courgette fritters.
We opt for the fregola, kale and baby broccoli salad. It turns out to be a fresh and tasty dish, with sesame seeds and sundried tomatoes adding a little extra flavour to the greens.
As we wait for our main to arrive, we can’t help but wonder when the last time we saw a restaurant in Abu Dhabi this busy was. But we can’t dwell on it too long as the porcini mushroom risotto and California burger with avocado and tomato salsa land on our table.
The risotto, while a little on the small side, is a beautiful dish, combining the nuttiness of the mushroom with the slight crunch of the rice perfectly.
Meanwhile, the burger is a delicious mix of textures, with the soft, fleshy avocado nicely complementing the tender beef patty.
It’s probably a little unfair to compare L’ETO to a regular restaurant, as perhaps the main draw here are the desserts and the coffee shop vibe.
But we must admit the food was more than up to scratch for an eatery where most of our neighbours were here to chat over coffee and cake.
By that reasoning, our choice of sweet has the potential to make or break our verdict of this place, but we aren’t disappointed.
The cherry cake is absolutely gorgeous and quite rich, made up of ten layers of moist cake and light cream and topped with whole cherries, chocolate shavings and a fruity sauce.
You could say it’s the cherry on top of a thoroughly impressive meal, but we’d never resort to
a cheap cliché like that…
