Time Out Says
There is no one else here yet and with so many steaming serving woks to sample from, we jump from our seats to break bread. We imagine we’ll find all the items you might expect at an Asian buffet; sushi, stir-fries and noodles. Instead, we find curries, hummus, salad bars and other oddities that, while they are not Asian, they are not wholly undesirable. This is a fine spot to bring a picky eater.
We taste small portions of everything from the venue’s Indian options to its Middle Eastern fare, and it’s not too bad. The buffet’s standout feature should be its live cooking station. During lunch and dinner, a chef is on hand to stir fry black pepper beef with vegetables, but he is not there on our visit to the buffet. Still, a chef takes your number and personally prepares your dish for you, and then it’s served hot to your table.
We order a plate of stir fried mixed vegetables and the black pepper beef. It arrives at our table in 15 minutes or so, but the flavour is flat and the peppery punch we’re expecting fails to materialise. The mixed vegetables were disappointingly bland. Fortunately, there is a small sauce station where you can add some extra flavours, such as Srichacha sauce and sweet chilli, which we add to make the bland veggies more appetising.
Jing Asia’s fanciful dessert table saves the meal. While we are not really ‘dessert people’, we are still a bit peckish. The desserts all look lovely and they taste as good as they look. We are certain that these desserts rotate on a frequent basis in a buffet such as this, but some standout desserts were the raspberry chocolate torte and their tiramisu.
Jing Asia is probably best suited to guests in the hotel. We wouldn’t go out of our way to dine here again, until it finds a more Asian identity. The service is fantastic, the ambiance is fine, but the food lacks flavour unless you are in it for just desserts.
