Jimmy's Killer Prawns - Abu Dhabi

Stick to its speciality dish and you can’t go wrong

Time Out Says

It’s an international chain restaurant in a mall, so you might be tempted to give this one a miss – unless you’ve heard about its legendary dish.

Jimmy’s Killer Prawns is known, unsurprisingly, for its prawns. Jimmy knows how to cook ’em.

You can opt for sushi, paella, salad or steak, but the restaurant’s signature dish is a mountain of prawns – 72 of them, to be exact, if there are four of you sharing. This comes with crispy fries or rice. You peel the prawns yourself so it’s a messy affair: great for kids’ birthday parties and families, less so for a business lunch. Fortunately, gloves are provided – and don’t think you won’t need them.

The prawns are marinated in a mild tomato sauce so they have enough flavour to eat on their own, but you’ll want to order a sauce. There are eight to choose from; we opted for Jimmy’s famous trio – peri peri, lemon butter and garlic oil – then got dunking.

The restaurant is on the third floor of Mushrif Mall, so if you take a seat at one of the red cushioned booths at the front, you’ll be gobbling prawns as shoppers pass by. It’s fun if you don’t mind people watching, but remember half of Abu Dhabi will be gawping at you as oil drips down to your elbows.

The restaurant provides highchairs and kids are free to roam around, screaming and/or giggling. Parents can distract them with the small aquarium in the middle of the restaurant or lift them up to see the chefs at work in the open kitchen. There’s plenty of space between the booths for highchairs or shopping bags.

Staff are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful – they gave us extra garlic sauce after overhearing we liked it – but they could do with looking up a bit more, as we were left without a fork as they stood idle on the other side of the restaurant.

The two of us made the fatal error of ordering the platter for three, which comes with 54 prawns, thinking 36 prawns between us didn’t sound enough. We were wrong, especially as we’d ordered starters as well.

But it was worth it, as our starters were as tasty as the prawns. We shared grilled calamari – which wasn’t at all rubbery – and seafood soup, a creamy broth packed with prawns, mussels and calamari rings.

Somehow, we found room for dessert. Though the vanilla ice cream with Mars bar sauce or crushed Oreos, Maltesers and raisins sounded tempting, we opted to share a slice
of strawberry cheesecake.

We should have quit while we were ahead. The menu described the sweet as smooth and rich with a hint of crunch – but it was nothing of the sort. It looked like it had been defrosted, had a frothy centre with a layer of tasteless sponge in the middle and the bottom was a soggy mess.

Jimmy’s isn’t a destination diner by any means, but if you love prawns then get stuck in.
