Time Out Says
If gourmet is your thing, it’s unlikely you’ll be heading to Heroes for a feed any time soon. But, if you’re a fan of good-value pub grub then there aren’t many better places.
This basement bar has been in the capital for long enough to be considered an institution. It’s a super-popular haunt for those who want to have a drink and chat, watch a football match or listen to live music (the incredible International Playboys are a fixture here most nights). But for food? It’s probably not the reason anyone is making a beeline for the venue, but nonetheless, it’s worth checking out.
This isn’t a three-course set menu kind of place, so we jump straight into the mains. One of us is looking after ourselves and orders a grilled veggie wrap, while the other one makes no bones about going for the fish and chips. We’re hear to review the pub food, after all.
The wrap is really good, actually. It’s a sizeable portion, for a start, and is stuffed with pesto grilled veggies and cheese, as well as sour cream and jalapeños. It all tastes fresh and fills a rather smug hole.
The fish and chips also comes in a serving that will fill you up. Two pieces of fish are nicely battered. The golden-brown coating crunches nicely in contrast to the pearly white fish underneath. The chips are proper pub ones. None of your skinny fries here, thank you very much.
Sometimes a hearty pub meal is just what you need.
