El Sombrero

Review: Classic Mexican dishes in a casual setting

Time Out Says

Found in one of Abu Dhabi’s veteran hotels, El Sombrero is unexpectedly quiet on our latest visit. But then again, we are here just as it’s opened, eager as ever to dive into a bowl of guac.

Our server makes no effort to explain which deals are on until we ask, and although the taco and mixed drink offer is tempting (it’s only Dhs99 per person), we resist and instead go for a few different plates.

Predictably, we start off with a bowl of the signature guacamole (sorry, not sorry) and we don’t regret the decision one bit.

The creamy, perfectly ripe, avocado is mashed up with onion, tomato, green chilli and coriander, and it somehow disappears in a matter of minutes.
Next, we go for some chicken quesadillas, and the fried triangles of tortilla are just as cheesy and indulgent as we hoped they’d be.

The meat is nicely marinated and joined by a few peppers and onions, and after we ask for a portion of sour cream (for some essential dipping), it’s a totally dreamy carb-fest.

Meanwhile, the tacos de camerόn come filled with huge battered prawns, crunchy coleslaw and spicy mayo.

It’s messy and impossible to devour elegantly, but we love everything about it. Squeezing the shellfish with a drizzle of fresh lime only adds to the already sky-high levels of perfection.

El Sombrero is casual, fun and totally unpretentious. The huge, high-quality portions prove that sometimes there’s nothing better than filling Mexican food.
