Diego Cafe

Diego Maradona-themed cafe has Argentinian dishes and a football vibe

Time Out Says

It’s easy to be cynical about themed restaurants. Especially about one inspired by divisive footballer Diego Maradona.

Of course, it’s England fans who are most likely to twitch at the mention of the Argentina legend. Memories of the diminutive forward punching the ball into the goal during the 1986 World Cup quarter-final are hard to banish.

But even the most bitter of supporter will be won over by Café Diego. It’s difficult not to be charmed by a restaurant that has shown so much commitment to a theme.

The restaurant is decorated to reflect Maradona’s life, from his early life growing up in Buenos Aires, through to his playing career at clubs around the world. There are huge murals of the man himself on the wall, and the shirts of his most famous teams flutter from a washing line. Each table has the choice of a Boca Juniors, Napoli or Barcelona chair, and the TV screens dotted around the room show footage of the little man in action.

And the menu, too, is inspired by the World Cup winner. Most of the dishes have an Argentinian slant, while there’s also the “Maradona Steak”.

Unfortunately, though, this is where Café Diego comes unstuck. The steak is a simple chunk of meat on a thin layer of mashed potato. It needs seasoning or a sauce to give it some life. And a rather bland quinoa salad isn’t an effective warm-up dish.

But dessert will bring a smile to your face, especially if you go for a mint-chocolate La Bombonera Cake. It’s decorated to look like a football pitch, complete with green-coloured coconut on the surface, a chocolate football and a Café Diego corner flag.

Don’t come here expecting culinary wonders. But for a night of football nostalgia, this restaurant is top of the league.

The bill (for one)

1x quinoa salad Dhs50
1x Maradonna Steak Dhs145
1x La Bombonera cake Dhs75
1x large water Dhs12
Total (excluding tax) Dhs282

The bottom line

A quirky and fun place for football fans.
