Like any all-you-can-eat buffet, it’s important not to make the rookie mistake of filling your plate with the first dishes you see. Instead, make like a pro and prowl CuiScene’s live cooking stations, checking out the competition.

The diners filling up on the restaurant’s 14 types of sushi had obviously never heard of this pearl of wisdom before – more fool them. And more chocolate fountain for us later.

CuiScene’s dishes change monthly, so frequent visitors don’t get bored. On our visit, we had a select few pieces of spicy tuna sushi, smoked salmon and a couple of hand-sized prawns; salad flavoured with a dollop of moutabbal, pomegranate seeds and hummus, and a single olive.

We still had plenty of space left for curry which is just as well as there were nine to choose from, including veggie options such as dahl. We by-passed the spring rolls at the Asian cooking station because they looked a little sorry for themselves, opting instead for the evening’s stand out dish from the European station: hambra fish in a creamy leek sauce, with asparagus tips and sautéed veg.

The chefs at CuiScene must have taken note of our review in 2012-2013’s Eating Out In Abu Dhabi because they’ve since upped their game when it came to the dessert selection – and fortunately for us, we’d saved room for it.

The gooey Brie, grapes and seeded rolls were tempting but we wanted to satisfy our sweet tooth – and childlike sense of fun. So, we plucked a couple of dates from the trunk of a 2ft edible palm tree and dipped marshmallows, meringues and bite-sized sponge cake into a chocolate fountain. Our dining companion opted for a chocolate mousse pyramid, which was as firm as crème brûlée but as soft as mousse on the tongue. We also sampled Umm Ali, a traditional local dessert which is served hot – and were glad we did. Made from pastry, cream, toasted pine nuts and a hint of rosewater, it resembled bread and butter pudding. Delicious.

The restaurant, which is on the ground floor, is all on one level and spacious so it’s suitable for wheelchairs. The layout also means you never have to queue for anything, and don’t feel rushed while filling your plate. The service is excellent; friendly chefs are on-hand to answer your questions, while waiters filled our glass so frequently we felt guilty for being so lazy.

Kids would enjoy watching the chefs at work, but on a cool evening, why sit indoors when you could be outside, overlooking the creek between the bridges? You can’t quite hear the waves lapping against the shore but the series of fountains that divide the lantern-lit terrace is all very Zen.

After dinner, relax in the cabanas on the terrace. Then walk off your meal under the stars on the promenade along the creek, which overlooks Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Even if you live here, you’ll feel like you’re on holiday.
