Cho Gao Marina Walk

Pan-Asian restaurant expands with a more spacious second outlet

Time Out Says

As we walk into the new Cho Gao location, we’re curious – how is it different from the original outlet, downtown?

Well, for starters, while the dining room is decorated with the familiar paper lanterns, bird cages and wooden chairs and tables, there is a lot more to it.

There’s more room for starters, it’s spacious and includes a sushi bar, a lounge area and an outdoor terrace that offers views of the hotel’s marina promenade.

There’s also a change in the music’s tempo. The club-style beats certainly add to the swish vibe it’s trying to establish.

The prices are pretty much the same as it’s older brother, and Cho Gao favourites such as wasabi prawns, pad Thai, wok-fried mains and sushi rolls are all present and correct, but there’s a load of new options, too.

We begin with the sesame-crusted tuna, recommended by our friendly waitress. To that we add an order of satay, which proves a wise decision. The chicken and beef skewers are succulent and coated in a sweet-spicy peanut sauce. The presentation may elevate the status of the humble street eat, but the flavours are faithful to the original.

As for the tuna, the fish is lightly seared with a crust of sesame seeds on top. While the plate is beautifully presented, with each cube served on a cracker, we find ourselves running out of the yuzu dressing that helps lift it.

We move on to a yellow curry with fish. It’s a mellow, fragrant dish is comfort in a bowl. The creamy sauce is sweet and light, with a gentle kick. And there’s just enough fish to share. We slurp it even after we run out of rice.

The coated and fried cubes of meat in the Thai chicken are tossed in a sweet-chilli sauce and served with cashew nuts and peppers. It’s a tasty dish, but not quite as moreish as the curry.

It’s quiet but it’ll take a lot of people for the space to be full. The food is good, so when busier, the venue will be bouncing.

The bill (for two)
1x satay Dhs58

1x yellow curry Dhs70
1x bok choy Dhs26
1x Thai chicken Dhs70

The bottom line

More choice, more space, same great food.
