Time Out Says
We’re graced with an array of amazing Japanese restaurants here in Abu Dhabi, so sometimes it’s easy to be a bit snobby about sushi conveyor belts.
You might presume that this is the kind of gimmick found soley in fast food-style restaurants, and that the food will be lacking freshness and creativity.
We’ll admit that we have some of these preconceptions in our mind when we arrive at Café Sushi, but as we enter the smart and stylish dining room, they are almost immediately shattered.
We take a seat by the belt and the waitress explains that for Dhs155 we can eat as much as we like, and also order some dishes à la carte. We don’t take much convincing that the latter is the way to go and we kick things off with a comforting bowl of miso soup that manages to be packed with flavour without being too salty. A good start.
As we’re finishing it off, one of the smiling chefs leans over the belt and offers us a platter of sashimi. And by the time we’ve nibbled a few warm edamame beans, we’ve had a least four plates handed over to us.
The sashimi is beautifully presented, but not as special as the salmon blow-torch nigiri.
Often nigiri can appear to be less exciting than the colourful maki rolls chefs create, but this dish is definitely an exception. The salmon belly is delicious, and accompanied by crab mayo and crispy kunafa, it’s a wonderful combination of texture, temperature and flavour.
We also try the dynamite and volcano signature maki. The latter contains the brilliant pairing of silky avocado and salmon, while the former is a deep-fried and slightly unusual creation that surely deserves points for thinking outside of the box.
The chef then suggests we try a chirashi bowl, which isn’t listed on the menu. The pile of sticky rice with salmon, tuna, crab, avocado and sweet and salty seasoning is absolutely amazing, the clear highlight of the night.
Not until the end do we finally grab something from the belt, and, sadly, the Californian roll we pluck is a bit uninspiring compared to the other plates.
We leave feeling fully satisfied and impressed at the value of this daily deal.
