But, as you walk through the intimately-sized eatery, the décor is a little uninspiring. Maybe it’s going for the fine-dining ‘stiff upper lip’ look. Some would say the dark, dimly-lit space is quite romantic. So it comes as no surprise that the few diners out tonight are couples.
The open kitchen means you can watch chefs kneading dough and hurling pizza bases in the air – great fun! Bocca has just revised its menu, so it’s a great time to sample its offerings.
Once seated, it doesn’t take long for the food to arrive. The complimentary basket of warm bread and dips features a tasty roll stuffed with olives, which is utterly delicious when paired with the sundried tomato paste.
The service from the outset is excellent and the genuinely warm staff are attentive to our needs.
We start with the fritto misto, a medley of fried fish. The squid is crispy and the batter has bite. Add a dollop of salsa verde and the starter comes alive. Next comes the standout dish – chicken ravioli. We savour each bite of the creamy, melt-in-the-mouth sauce. The calzone, on the other hand, lacks depth and has an overwhelming taste of mozzarella and little else. Portion size is generous and although we are already satisfyingly full, we succumb, like most, to a classic Italian pudding. The warm chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream is decadent, gooey and, quite frankly, addictive. The complimentary petit fours made up of crunchy meringue, shortbread and biscotti adds an extra nice sweet touch to our meal.
The lacklustre ambience is forgiven once you taste the food – and the staff will win you over.
