The West Hollywood import and celebrity hangout arrives on our sandy shores

Time Out Says

As the framed photos of the Berri’s owner with Hollywood stars greet you as you enter this hot new LA export would suggest, this eatery is popular with the sparkling world of celebrities. So, tonight we’re on the case to see if all that glistens is actually gold.

Floor-to-ceiling windows frame one side of the swish restaurant, offering diners unobstructed views of Al Raha Beach.

The room is laid out with marble tables, plush leather sofas and all-black chairs, while filament light bulbs hang from the exposed, industrial-style ceiling. It has all the makings to become that hip, cool place to be seen on a packed night. Sadly, that’s not the case on the evening we visit. We are one of only two tables in for dinner. Thankfully the music playing creates enough of an atmosphere for it not to matter.

The menu at Berri’s features dishes such as salads, pastas and organic juices – it is a West Hollywood spot, after all.
The kale salad is an instant hit. It’s a good serving packed with dried cranberries, apricots and quinoa. We’ve had a few kale salads in the city and this is certainly the most creative.

The orecchiette with chicken, sun-dried tomatoes and broccoli, is tossed in a garlic-oil sauce and while our bowl lacks seasoning, that’s easily remedied. Something we can’t fix however, is how greasy the pasta gets as it cools.

The venue’s signature dish is lobster pizza. The base is topped with a creamy, tomato sauce. We’re more than happy with the generous amounts of shrimp and lobster, and while we’ve never had anything like it, we’re not entirely blown away.

It’s all good value, especially for somewhere with such a reputation back in the US, but we can’t see it getting the same following here in the UAE just yet.
