Back Yard Bistro

Review: Interesting pub grub in a quirky, sports bar setting

Time Out Says

Within seconds of entering we overhear one of life’s many important philosophies being digested at the table: “Burgers can’t be blue, because plasters are already blue.” Blue burgers they say? Well, let’s be having you Back Yard Bistro.

Caught somewhere between where the Beano would get up to mischief and the end zone of a teen slasher movie, the décor in BYB is U-bends morphing into petrol cans with a gasket or two thrown in for good, edgy measure. It’s a very blokey bar, and with a never ending amount of TVs beaming out sport, you’re sure to never miss a moment of the big games if you turn up here with friends. That said, the terrace is vast and softer in design and Tuesday’s ladies’ night is one of the city’s better deals so non-blokey, non-sports fans, don’t be put off by this.

We arrive on a Monday night and grab a seat on a table made out of reclaimed wood, old plumbing and the bottom half of a former shop window mannequin. It’s quiet but slowly fills up as we fill up on dishes. There’s only one sensible way of ordering and that’s to point at a selection of plates and ask they all come at once.

The BYB super combo (chicken wings, fried calamari, onion rings, chicken strips, rock shrimp tempura and steak fries with garlic mayo), chicken quesedillas (no explanation needed) and beef and mushroom sliders are all given the green light.

Three ample-sized trays arrive and there’s plenty to enjoy. The chicken strips and wings are peppery and exactly what you want with a hops and a game on. The quesedillas are crispy, yet gooey (that classic combo of fried stuff with cheese) while those eye-catching blue sliders are surprisingly delicious. Out of the blue, you could say. They deserve the standout look because, in truth, they are stand out among the food here.

The bill (for two)
1x BYB super combo Dhs80
1x chicken quesadilla Dhs45
1x beef and mushroom sliders Dhs40
Total (incl service & taxes) Dhs189.75

The bottom line

No frills food that does the job.
