Almaz by Momo
Time Out Says
This place offers some traditional options of small plates that make a big impression. The zaalouk is a simple-sounding dish of aubergine, tomatoes and onions, seasoned with Moroccan spices and coriander. But the smooth texture makes it perfect for scooping up with fresh bread, and it packs more flavour than you would imagine. Then there’s the chicken livers in a pomegranate sauce, a perfect combination of rich and sweet. The sauce is so moreish that you’ll be mopping it up with any bread you have left over.
You can enjoy this tasty introduction to Morocco while gazing at the water. There’s a cool terrace set alongside the terrace on Al Maryah Island,
or you can sit inside the plush, Marrakech-inspired dining room.
When it comes to the mains, the familiar tagines and couscous dishes are available. Both of these Moroccan staples are presented beautifully − the couscous is a perfectly formed mound adorned with apricots and chickpeas, while the tagine arrives in its traditional, ornate pot, before being given a grand unveiling.
Taste-wise, the tagine performs better. The lamb version comes with a tender chunk of meat in a rich gravy; it’s a warming meal when sat outside during chilly winter nights. As for the couscous, the texture is soft and fluffy, but the accompanying chicken is a bit dry and uninspiring. There are some standouts at Almaz by Momo, but several dishes fail to pack a punch. But it’s still well worth a try for some comforting cuisine in a stylish venue.

The bottom line
A bit hit and miss with the mains, but the starters make it a pleasant place for a casual meal.
