99 Sushi Bar was created in Spain, but this is no fusion joint, this is a Japanese restaurant through and through. From the sushi counter seating in front of the chefs preparing the dishes to the menu filled with terms such as tobiko, usuzukuri and katakuchi iwasi, it’s all legit.
The venue is incredibly impressive, from the water feature outside to the dimly lit bar area and the super-cool dining room. From the décor to the service to the menu, you can tell nothing has been left to chance in this place. The attention to detail is superb.
You’d be forgiven for thinking you’d be on the end of a pretty hefty bill – some of the sashimi dishes touch Dhs240 and rib-eye wagyu will set you back Dhs420. But we manage to have a filling, diverse and impressive selection for less than Dhs500 for two. Our waiter recommended a couple of dishes (the toro nigiri and warm temptsuyu maki) that are meal highlights, and don’t break the bank. In fact, everything here is superb; the gyoza’s rich, slow-cooked meat is like a warm embrace, the salmon tartare is light and moreish, and the sushi is expertly prepared and offers loads of flavour and complementing textures.
It’s all served with a sense of theatre, plate by beautiful plate, by the brilliant staff.
