The venue's tropical take mixes classics and lighter options

Dish of the week: New menu at Trader Vic's

You can Always rely on Trader Vic’s for a fun night out.

With tropical flowers everywhere, knick-knacks that make it feel like you’re dining in a beach hut on a remote island, plus quirky coconut-shaped glasses, it’s basically impossibly to be miserable at the Abu Dhabi outlet of this popular fusion restaurant.

The food is also excellent, too, and we’re pleased to see the return of some old classics on the new menu.

We felt like weeping with joy (well, almost) when we saw the jalepeño cheese balls among the starters. Packed with oozing melted cheese, these little spheres of deliciousness are so naughty, but also so extremely good.

Being able to cook the beef cho cho to your liking at the table is also exceptionally entertaining (yes, we are very easily pleased).
The beef flambé is another dish that’s cooked at your table. But this time you can let the professionals do it and instead sit back and video the theatrics and huge flames for  your Instagram story.

As well as the old favourites, there are also many more healthy options on the new menu.

But that doesn’t mean that these dishes are boring and unsubstantial. In fact each addition is packed with goodness and great flavour combinations.

The salmon lomi lomi is a beautiful blend of colours and different textures. The marinated salmon fish is mixed with sweet, juicy mango, refreshing cucumber, fresh red onion and fiery red chillies.

Meanwhile, the delicately presented barbecue miso chicken is slow-cooked in the lively eatery’s signature wood-fired oven  and served with wasabi mash and stir-fried vegetables. Another sensational main course option is the huge Châteaubriand steak, which is designed for two people to share.

There are also a number of set menus that allow you to sample all the signature dishes. Available for groups of six or more, prices start from Dhs285 per person.
Open daily 5pm-2am. Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi, Al Zahiyah (02 697 9011).
