The Italians are the kings and queens of comfort food, there’s no doubt about it. Whether it’s mouth-watering pizzas, carb-tastic pastas or melt-in-your-mouth desserts, they’ve got you covered. And, when it comes to homely Italian eateries in Abu Dhabi, you’ll might struggle to find one better than Azzurro, in Souk Qaryat Al Beri.
We head down hoping to indulge ourselves with some soul food and are more than impressed by the charming venue. We begin with the Antipasto All’ Italiano, a huge platter of delicious bites that is perfect for those who like to try a little bit of different foods. It features a series of cold cuts and cheeses as well as olives, sundried tomatoes, artichoke and aubergine. Each bite is somehow better than the last and it takes all our willpower not to over-stuff our faces.
We also have a risotto with broccoli, burrata and lemon zest to get through, however.
There is an incredible blend of flavours combined perfectly, from the light zing of the lemon to the gorgeous Italian creamy buffalo milk of the burrata. The carnoroli rice is cooked just how we like it, with just enough crunch left for us to savour.
So far, so good, we must admit.
Our dessert of Italian favourite tiramisu has the power to make or break the entire dining experience.
Thankfully, as it arrives in front of us a waft of coffee fills the air (and is delightful). It takes just one bite to declare our meal a complete and utter triumph. The strong flavour of the coffee contrasts brilliantly with the light and creamy mascarpone.
It’s a classic done perfectly.
With amazing food, a chic but relaxed venue and great service throughout, Azzurro certainly ticks all the boxes for us.
So next time you’re feeling in need of a comforting pick-me-up, or an arm around the shoulder in food form, look no further than this delightful taste of Italy.
