@DISTRICT by Amalfi

Revamped Italian offers charm and homely New York-inspired dishes

Time Out Says

Entering the newly revamped @DISTRICT by Amalfi (formerly just plain old Amalfi) from the hotel entrance you’ll see splashes of colourful graffiti on the corridor, and signage that’s been funked up with the new name. It’s all fresh and inviting and seems to deliver on the promise of a mash up of Italian style and New York urban grit. Enter from the poolside, however and the old sign is still there and you wouldn’t necessarily know that a refurbishment has taken place.

That follows through to the dining space, too, which is a lot more sleek and sophisticated than the new name and branding would suggest.

The menu is split into small plates, starters and salads, platters, pizza, mains and desserts. We’re dining on a quiet week night and though the staff are charming, there’s not a lot of hustle about the service (we guess that side of things is more Italy than New York).

We order a bunch of dishes to share, which pretty much all come out at the same time (it’s the norm now).

Tempura anchovies are a real fusion, from Asian-style batter to a Middle Eastern harissa dip. There’s a lot of them, and we love the salty hit of the anchovy fillets themselves.

Arancini is a little less successful, the filling (parmesan and chive) lacks any kind of texture, the taste is wishy-washy and the accompanying sauce is just not the promised basil pesto.

The cheese platter is the most expensive thing we order, and we’re not quite sure its worth it. There’s no explanation of what the cheeses are and they’re a touch too cold.

A halloumi pizza is head and shoulders the best thing we eat. Pizza is the house speciality and justifiably so. The base is crispy but chewy, the tomato sauce and mozzarella is perfect, too. The halloumi is, well, halloumi. We’d be back in a heartbeat for another pizza.

The bill (for two)
1x tempura anchovies Dhs22
1x arancini Dhs25
1x cheese platter Dhs96
1x halloumi pizza Dhs64
Total (inluding taxes) Dhs207

The bottom line
Not all perfect, but the pizza is.
