Creamfields preview with Axwell^Ingrosso

Famed house duo talk about their crazy career so far

Creamfields returns to Abu Dhabi with some high-profile acts, but the biggest names are Swedish duo Axwell^Ingrosso. We had a chat with them ahead of the festival...

How has your relationship endured and continued to thrive, while so many bands are unable to stay the course long term?

Transitioning to Axwell^Ingrosso after Swedish House Mafia was a big moment for us, not just in our careers but in our personal lives and going through that craziness together has definitely made us closer as friends and colleagues. We end up relying on each other a lot. We know we have each other’s backs and that trust is probably what’s made us last longer than others.

How did you both get your starts as DJs when growing up in Sweden?
Ingrosso: My father ran a house and techno label in Sweden so I was always around dance music and obsessed with it.
Axwell: I grew up in more rural Sweden so I discovered music through computers and computer game music on the Amiga 500.

You are prolific recording artists as well as live performers. Which is more enjoyable for you?

Every song is different. Barricade, for example, we made for our shows because we felt we needed a song to just go “boom” and kick things off. Whenever we make a song we have a vision in our heads of it in our sets.

How do you continue to keep your sound fresh after being together so long?

We’re always looking for new music, fashion, and design but whatever we do, we do it in our style. We Axwelll^Ingrosso-fy it! Trends come and go but people who do their own thing always seem to stay around.

Swedish House Mafia is still revered, do you ever think you’ll reunite?
Right now, we’re very happy with where Axwell^Ingrosso is going but you never know!

Creamfields is back after a three-year break, how important is the festival?
Creamfields has always been one of those festivals we just have to play. The crowd and energy is unbeatable.

You are regulars in the UAE, what are your thoughts on the music scene here?
It’s really exciting here since the UAE always has such a mix of people.

Do you ever have time to take in the sights? Are there any attractions you would like to visit while in Abu Dhabi?

When we have the chance we always make sure to check out the sights. There’s the Louvre Abu Dhabi that we really want to see. It looks amazing.

Who was the best performer musically, and who do you have the most fun with?

Pharrell [Williams] is so inspiring. We’ve known him for many years now and whenever we are in the studio together, there’s a special vibe between us. Vargas & Lagola are our friends and there’s nothing more fun than being in the studio with your friends.

Do you have a favourite gig?
Creamfields, of course!
