An incredible cultural extravaganza of global musical acts, art displays, dazzling dance performances and a stunning light show will mark the historic opening of the Louvre Abu Dhabi.
The entire art world will be watching on when a landmark museum more than a decade in the making finally swings open its doors to the public on Saturday, November 11 – and capital culture chiefs are set to make it a milestone moment never to be forgotten.
A fantastic four days of events will celebrate the launch of the iconic museum, with international stage stars in action each night.
French singer and rock guitarist M (Matthieu Chadid), who has been mesmirising crowds in his native land for years and has scooped a remarkable eight French Grammys during his stellar career, has been handed the honour of performing the curtain-raising Saturday slot at the Saadiyat Island cultural hub.
Malian musician Fatouma Diawara, a multi-talented singer, dancer and actress who has collaborated with the likes of Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz fame, will be bringing her unique sounds, inspired by Mali tradition and influenced by her love of jazz, funk and pop, to the capital on Sunday night.
Beirut-born Ibrahim Maalouf has fast become one of France’s most popular instrumentalists, winning a string of international classical trumpet competitions and racking up a host of musical awards.
He will perform his jazz translation of Oum Kalthoum’s The Thousand and One Nights on Monday, November 13.
Rounding off the musical melting pot on the Tuesday will be veteran Colombian dancer and singer, Totó La Momposina fuses together African, native Indian and Spanish traditions in her hugely creative performances.
A wide variety of other musical and dance performances will take place during the big launch festival, as well as flyovers from Etihad A380 aircraft. Visitors will also be able to enjoy free guided tours during the opening week, exploring the greatest masterpieces that are now housed in the capital.
The My First Visit to Louvre Abu Dhabi tour will introduce families to art works on display and highlight key elements of the dome-like architecture crafted by Jean Nouvel.
A carnival of music, light, video and theatre by French pyrotechnic maestros, Groupe F will launch Louvre Abu Dhabi in dramatic style on November 11, while a number of workshops will be offered.
The music acts are special ticketed events, the performances before 9pm are included in the standard entry ticket.
