Jason Derulo at MAD in Abu Dhabi

The R&B mega-star electrifies crowds with a high-energy set

Apr 13. MAD, Yas Island.

When you’re a multi-platinum-selling singing sensation, who sells out arenas all over the world, you would think it would be nigh on impossible to make a discreet entrance.

But as American mega-star Jason Derulo ambled on stage for his headlining set at Abu Dhabi superclub MAD, the packed crowd of revellers were so wrapped up in an intense bout of bone-shaking beats already, being laid down by dynamic DJs, he almost sneaked under the radar. But the R&B icon, who has racked up sales of more than 50 million and been a mainstay at the top of the charts for the best part of a decade, soon made sure he had everyone’s attention.

Derulo treated fans at the heaving Yas Island glamour spot to a rapid-fire set of some of his best-loved tracks, easing into the performance with a crowd-pleasing rendition of Ridin’ Solo before deciding to get a better vantage point to entertain his audience.

Oozing charisma, stage presence and the self-assured swagger of a man at the top of his game, Derulo clambered on top of the MAD bar, which got the crowds roaring even more.

We were immersed in every lyric as Derulo showcased his new song Swalla, before hitting top note with classic tunes Talk Dirty and Want to Want Me.

Just as Derulo was hitting high stride, he brought his cameo show to a halt after just a handful of songs. There was no disappointment among the music-loving throngs, however. They voted with their feet by continuing to dance the night away to a barrage of tunes right through until closing time.

Sure, we wanted more from Derulo, but the MAD experience is hard to beat.

The bottom line
Derulo captivates with a rapid-fire set.
