Heroes has welcomed many of us over the years – the underground pit is a favourite with many expats, and for good reason. Jam-packed with regular “heroes”, the bar is always bustling with some sort of atmosphere; the weekends are certainly more lively than the weekdays. So we decided to check out the International Playboys, the resident band that has been palying here in Abu Dhabi longer than we can remember.
When we walked into the venue, the band was already warming up. And by that we mean they had walked onto the stage, grabbed their instruments and cracked straight into the first song: a sign of a tight band. We heard covers of rock and pop songs, as well as some adaptations of club classics.
The bassist acted as a compere between tracks, adding light humour and fluidity throughout the night.
All band members could thankfully hold a note, with the impressive drummer even letting his lungs loose on a couple of tracks. The audience felt at home with the band thanks to its quirky persona. This fun night is the perfect way to get out of the house, listen to some talented musicians singing songs we can all relate to, and add some zing to the middle of your week.
Tue and Wed, from 7pm. Crowne Plaza Abu Dhabi (02 616 6101).
The bottom line
You’ll certainly be singing along.
